Summary and
Impact
Empowering young women towards financial independence
My master's thesis examines ways in which young women in Germany can be empowered to take control of their financial future. Through a combination of qualitative research, behavioural analysis and human-centred design, the project identifies the key structural, educational and psychological barriers preventing equal financial participation. The resulting initiative, developed in collaboration with the FinTech company Finanzguru, translates these findings into practical measures: a digital financial simulation tool and conversation cards designed to raise awareness, boost self-confidence, and encourage discussion about money. By integrating design strategy, user experience (UX) thinking, and social impact, the project aims to encourage long-term behavioural change and contribute to a fairer financial landscape.
Main contributions included:
Development of a digital financial simulator that visualises personal and financial scenarios.
Conduct an A/B test to evaluate the effectiveness of gender-specific design and communication approaches.
Strategic framework for female-focused financial education, grounded in behavioural design and empowerment.

Cooperation with Finanzguru
I developed the master’s thesis in collaboration with Finanzguru, a German fintech company specialising in personal financial management. Working in the design team provided valuable insights into real user behaviour and product development processes. This collaboration provided access to expert interviews, user testing resources and professional feedback throughout the project. An A/B test was also conducted within the Finanzguru app itself to evaluate gender-specific communication and visual approaches. For Finanzguru, the research provided a deeper understanding of female financial behaviour, as well as new strategic perspectives on inclusive design and market opportunities within the growing female finance sector.
Problem space
Despite growing public awareness, young women in Germany still face significant barriers to achieving financial independence. Structural inequalities, traditional gender roles and limited financial education are compounded by psychological factors such as insecurity. Consequently, many women lack the knowledge and confidence to engage proactively with financial issues. This imbalance restricts individual freedom and reinforces systemic inequality at a societal level.
Project goals
The project aims to empower young women to take control of their financial decisions by providing them with accessible, motivating and user-friendly tools. By combining behavioural insights with interactive digital tools, the project intends to reduce barriers to entry, boost self-efficacy and encourage sustained engagement with personal finance. Ultimately, this work should contribute to greater financial equality and resilience.

Project result

The final outcome of the project is the digital financial simulator, which was developed as part of the 'Mātā' initiative, founded as part of the master's thesis. Created in collaboration with Finanzguru, the initiative aims to empower young women to take control of their financial future by providing accessible, motivating, relatable tools. The simulator allows users to explore how different life choices, such as career paths, family planning and investment behaviour, affect their long-term financial stability. By translating complex financial data into interactive, personalised scenarios, the simulator helps women to recognise potential challenges, plan proactively, and make informed decisions with confidence.

Personal learning
Through this project, I realised how deeply psychology influences design, especially with regard to behavioural change and motivation. Understanding emotional triggers and cognitive barriers is essential for creating an empowering user experience.
Conducting the A/B test and performing its statistical evaluation strengthened my ability to work with data-driven insights and translate them into meaningful design decisions. Taking on such a comprehensive project independently taught me to balance creativity, structure and perseverance.
At the same time, I learned how crucial external feedback is, whether from Finanzguru collaborators or fellow students, to overcome obstacles and recognise new perspectives. Ultimately, I realised that progress often necessitates abandoning ideas that do not benefit the user. Making decisions based on research and evidence, even if it means discarding a favourite idea, invariably yields a stronger outcome.
