Summary and

Impact

PlanetBite was created to integrate sustainability into everyday shopping. The platform provides clear insights and rewarding incentives to inspire conscious and responsible consumer choices.

The aim of this strategic design project was to encourage more sustainable consumer choices in the food sector. Based on extensive research, interviews and workshops, the PlanetBite concept was created. The project involved designing a mobile application and in-store supermarket integration to make sustainability information transparent and accessible, while offering positive incentives such as cashback rewards. The project sought to empower consumers to adopt more responsible shopping behaviours in their daily lives by combining communication, information, and motivation.

Main contributions included:

Barriers to sustainable consumption, such as unclear labelling and high prices, were overcome by providing accessible information and offering financial incentives

The importance of consumer decision-making power was emphasised, and the potential for collective behavioural change was demonstrated

The applicability of a vision for a market-driven transition towards sustainability beyond the food sector was articulated

Project Details

Problem space

The challenge of sustainable consumption was examined in the context of everyday grocery shopping. Barriers such as unclear product labelling, the high price of sustainable goods and a lack of consumer trust in existing certifications were identified. It was also observed that there are too few incentives to encourage sustainable purchases, since these products are often more expensive than conventional alternatives. The complexity of environmental information was recognised as a major obstacle to consumers making informed choices.

Project goals

The project aimed to develop a solution that would simplify access to sustainability information and make environmentally friendly options more appealing. The design approach chosen aimed to integrate transparency, positive incentives and user engagement into the shopping experience. The goal was to empower consumers to contribute to CO₂ reduction in an intuitive and rewarding way.

Project result

PlanetBite is a hybrid system consisting of a mobile app and supermarket integration. It provides consumers with transparent data on environmental impacts, rewards them with cashback for sustainable purchases and supports them with community-driven product insights. The aim was to design a positive and engaging shopping experience that would enable immediate behavioural change and have a long-term impact on sustainable consumption.

Personal learning

In addition to my design responsibilities, I also took on the role of project manager. Through this experience, I learned how important organization, team spirit, and motivation are for successful collaboration. I realized that it’s essential to keep everyone engaged and to leverage the strengths of each team member. I also gained a deeper understanding of how different design methods and techniques can be integrated to create a cohesive service design and how valuable it is to approach the topic strategically and holistically.
